30th November 2016 – Bean Goose

A single Bean Goose was very close to the road in the field opposite the opencast between Ashington and Longhirst. There was also lots of Fieldfares and Redwings feeding along roadside hedges.

Other birds of note included five Purple Sandpipers with a flock of Oystercatchers, Redshanks and Turnstones roosting near Snab Point, Cresswell at high tide.

Prestwick Carr – 27th Nov 2016

A Great Grey Shrike still remains at Prestwick Carr.  Today it was  on the Bridal track north of  the sentry box.

There was a Water Pipit with Meadow Pipits and Wagtails on the small pool just west of Chevington Burn mouth on the 26th Nov.

There was also seven Shorelark’s also showing well at times, which were still showing on the 27th at 15:30.

Shorelarks 26th Nov 2016

A couple of pictures of the East Chevington Shorelarks, as the flock of 7 delighted many observers near the burn mouth. Other species seen here included, Bittern, Twite, Water pipit and Snow Bunting. A Marsh Harrier was more unusual at nearby Druridge Pools. On the sea were Long Tailed Duck, Common Scoter (c100) and Red Throated Divers.

Backworth – 26th Nov 2016

There was Jack Snipe and Willow Tit  at Backworth this pm.

There was also a Bewick’s Swan with Greylag and Pink-footed Geese on the flood  to the north of flash road at 13.30 then flew east at 14.00

Newbiggin & Woodhorn – 24th November 2016

An Albino Cormorant flown south with 6 typical birds, Newbiggin – a first for me.

At Woodhorn Flashes north pool at 10:10hrs there was an adult Greenland White-fronted Goose with Greylags.

Northumberland – 19th November

On the 19th November there was Long-tailed Duck at Bothal Pond!  Possibly Site first?

Whilst at….

Chevington north pool there were three Long-tailed Duck, three Scaup, two Mergansers, 3+ Pintail & 21 Whoopers.

Leazes Park – 17th & 19th Nov 2016

It was great to see Waxwings in Leazes Park on the 17th November, whilst on the 19th, there was a nice pair of Goosander on the lake.

Waxwing – 18th November 2016

8 Waxwing in Wark this morning. In trees opposite doctors surgery.

Also 14 Waxwing in Hareshaw Linn, Bellingham. Feeding on hawthorn berries by static caravans.

Black Redstart etc – Cullercoats 18th Nov 2016

A cracking male Black Redstart was enjoying the abundant insect prey in a sunny corner of Cullercoats Bay today, along with a male Stonechat, a new site for this species for me, two Grey Wagtails, two Rock Pipits and seven Pied Wagtails. This is the second Black Redstart here recently, with a female/immature bird present two weeks ago also.
